Verizon Wireless makes the process of porting numbers from one carrier to the next easier than ever, typically taking only 24-48 hours and requiring only a PIN number as identification.
My Verizon app or website make it easy to request a transfer PIN; business account users or legacy Verizon customers may need to provide their four-digit account pin instead.
Getting Started
No matter your reason for wanting to switch, porting your phone number from Verizon can be an easy and cost-saving way to gain access to an alternative carrier's network that may offer better service and save you money on monthly plans. The process can be completed online, in store or over the phone; here are a few things to keep in mind when porting.
Before beginning the porting process, you should request from Verizon a PIN that can be used when porting your number to another carrier. A PIN works like a password and can only ever be used once when making such transfers - either by calling customer service or visiting its website. Once you've obtained it, your new carrier will use it to complete porting process.
If you have a contract with Verizon, be aware that an early termination fee could apply if you port out before it has completed its term. This penalty can vary depending on what device is being transferred over to another provider; to avoid this cost altogether before porting out, read your terms and conditions carefully beforehand.
Once you've obtained a transfer PIN from Verizon, your next step should be notifying the new service provider that you are porting over your lines to them. They should provide both your PIN and account number so they can manage the porting process on their own.
Keep in mind that porting a Verizon Wireless number may take between 24 hours and 10 days, though some Verizon representatives may misinform you by promising only 24 hours as an estimate for your porting process. Therefore, for your own protection and peace of mind it is wise to get an exact estimation from someone familiar with these ports.
Preparing for the Port
If you are unhappy with your current communication provider, one way to change is to port your phone number from Verizon to another provider. While the process itself is usually simple and quick, there are a few key considerations when porting with Verizon that must be considered prior to beginning any porting process.
First step to porting is gathering all necessary documentation. This may include your recent phone bill that lists all numbers to be ported as well as account holders who grant permission for porting, and a letter from them authorizing such action.
Note that a Verizon Business port differs from traditional ports in that a regular port forwards an inbound call to another number, while Verizon Business port involves moving your business phone number from Verizon to Talkroute as part of a transition process.
As soon as you port your Verizon Wireless number to Talkroute, its old number will be automatically disconnected on your Verizon account and any tethering devices like smartwatches, tablets or hotspots connected via these lines will no longer function - potentially incurring ongoing fees for services that were once free. Therefore, to prevent unexpected charges it is advisable that any such devices are disconnected prior to porting.
At the outset of your porting process, your Verizon representative will ask if you are replacing an existing line or creating an entirely new phone number. Answering this question correctly will determine whether you require activating a temporary number that will eventually be changed out with your permanent number once completed.
As soon as you contact Verizon's representative, be sure to request and collect your four-digit Account PIN and have your account number ready. Keep this PIN safe; only share it with porting companies who require it within seven days.
During the Port
When porting a Verizon business number, the process can differ slightly than porting personal numbers. You must contact the losing carrier to get an account PIN that can facilitate porting; this PIN is valid for one week so start porting immediately!
Request your PIN via My Verizon, either the website or app, or by dialing #PORT on your phone. Note that it only supports post-paid Verizon numbers - not compatible with prepaid or Business phones. Depending on which number type is being ported out, porting may take from two to 24 hours and afterward your new carrier will inform you.
When porting over a Verizon number, it is also essential that any linked device lines such as smartwatches, tablets and hotspots be disconnected to avoid any unexpected fees from Verizon after your porting is complete. If this step is forgotten it would be wiser contacting them directly than risk any unnecessary charges being applied post port.
If you want to transfer a Verizon wireless number, a Letter of Authorization (LOA) form must be completed and submitted in order to transfer all necessary data including name, date of birth and service address to your new provider. Providing them with this LOA document allows them to start porting processes quickly.
Be mindful that porting out from Verizon may incur an ETF fee, designed to discourage early contract termination. Before trying to port out of Verizon, make sure your contract hasn't changed and ensure all parties involved can comply.
As well as your LOA document, your new provider will require that you present them with your Verizon account number, phone number and Transfer PIN. Keep this PIN confidential; share it only with those that you're transferring your number to - for instance when submitting or returning signed LOAs.
After the Port
Once your porting process is complete, Verizon Wireless should no longer appear as your carrier on your phone. There may still be an initial period in which inbound calls to that number route through to Verizon; this period is known as dual or mixed service and typically lasts 24-48 hours while all switches within your telephone network have been reset.
If you need to verify the completion of a port, call Verizon's Porting Department who can tell you its status or use this link:
Always bear in mind that Verizon Wireless may refuse to port out your number in certain instances. Examples may include:
Outstanding Balances on Your Account: For customers with subsidized or contract service plans, it is critical that any outstanding balances be settled prior to initiating port out. Otherwise, an Early Contract Termination Fee (ETF) could apply when your contract ends.
Tie Down Device Lines: Before initiating the port out process, if any lines that are connected to devices like smartwatches, tablets, or hotspots needing porting out it is imperative that these are disconnected and properly shut off - otherwise ongoing charges on these devices will still apply even though their lines have been disconnected from service.
Verizon Porting Department may issue you with a PIN that must be entered to complete the porting process successfully and your Verizon account will no longer show any activity associated with that number going forward. If successful, you will be notified that the port was successful and this PIN can then be entered.
